Networking the Multilevel Management System

Many locations wish to have multiple computers accesssing and sharing the same data within the MMS. This may be due to a high volume of customers or the desire to access records and run reports from one computer while checkout is done on a different computer. MMS can be upgraded to support this at any time without any loss of existing data.

Once your MMS system is networked, any data changed on one computer will be seen on other networked systems. MMS is also designed so that if two users attempt to change the same data at the same time, only one user will be able to and the "second" user of the data will have to retrieve the data again to ensure that they have the latest data and are not making changes to "dirty" data. This ensure the integrity of your data.

The steps for networking MMS are as follows:

  1. Network your computers in a peer-to-peer (Windows networking is fine) or server based network. This will require a hub, switch, or cross-over cable to connect the computer and a network card in each computer. You may wish to consult a computer professional if you are unfamilar with network configuration and installation.
  2. Purchase 5 user network database engine ($1495) and purchase one network installation of MMS ($149.75) for each additional computer you need beyond your original MMS purchase. NOTE: You only need to purchase one database engine no matter how many computers (up to 5) are going to be networked with MMS as this supports up to 5 connections from the same LAN. Therefore, two add to network computers to a MMS single-user system, you would need to purchase one network database engine and 2 network installation. Also, the same network database engine can be shared among other Sunshines Support Services software that you may wish to network as well.
  3. Install network database engine on all computers to be running MMS.
  4. Install MMS on all computers that do not yet have MMS installed.
  5. Run the network configuration program included on the MMS CD-ROM on all computers to be running MMS.

If you only wish to add MMS to a second computer with "read-only" access to the data, this can be done by adding a MMS Network Installation and copying the MMSWIN.DB database file from the main computer to the second computer whenever you wish to "refresh" the data. Changes made to the data on the second computer would not be seen by the front computer and would be lost whenever the data is refreshed again. The purpose of this is for customer lookup or report access on the second computer and not performing any invoicing, customer, or product updates on that comptuer.

Detailed steps can be found in the MMS integrated help file that are easily followed by the person installing MMS on the additional computers. Generally, it should take no longer than 15-30 minutes to add each additional station once the network architecture is in place and functioning correctly.
